You are self-employed if you run your own business by selling goods o charging for services, either under your own name or a business name, and not via a limited company registered with Companies House.  You:

  • sell your goods/services to make a profit
  • have more than one customer
  • are responsible for your success or failure in business
  • charge an agreed price for your work

You can do this as a sole trader (you own the business 100%) or as a partnership (you own the business with one or more others).
